Sunnyside Newsletter

Hi Sunnyside Residents!

Welcome to summertime! This past month of June was jam packed with many new events. The month started off with the Salute to Israel’s 60 years of independence at the Israeli day parade. The Young Israel of Sunnyside was represented by our president, Mr. Weiner, our vice-president, Sam Wolfson, the Holland and Mermelstein families, and Debbie and Shoshie Firestone. Thank you all for saluting Israel and representing Sunnyside.

Also this month, we had the holiday of Shavous, where we celebrated the receiving of the Torah from Hashem at Har Sinai. Shavous in Sunnyside was really beautiful. The entire kollel was present for the holiday as were many Shul members and guests. The Cohens hosted a beautiful, delicious, and Torah imbued meal the first night of Shavous for the kollel members. The kollel members would like to thank them. The learning continued through the night in the Shul until wee hours of the morning. The following morning the entire Shul was invited to a delicious Chalav Yisrael ice cream Kiddush after the davening. The custom is to eat dairy foods on Shavous. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Weiner for the delicious ice cream. We are looking forward to continuing this tradition in Sunnyside each year!

Throughout this month, our renowned kollel member, Jonathan Cohen has been giving Torah and Halacha insights to the women of Sunnyside with his Shiurim on Yom Tov, women , Tefilla and Hilchos Shabbos. The classes will be continuing throughout the summer months as well. Thank you Jonathan for you hard work in preparing the shiurim!

Sunnyside members can look forward to seeing new activities this fall. The Sunnyside Shul’s board has agreed to start a Hebrew Sunday School for children of the community. The children will learn about the Jewish holidays, the weekly parasha and how to read the Alef Beis. Hopefully, with the start of a Hebrew School, we can better serve our community. We also want to have events at our Shul once a month. These activities, to mention just a few, will include a “Dessert and Conversation” evening, trips to kosher restaurants for lunch, Music night and game night. Many of these ideas are still in the making. It is our hope that with work, we will have a thriving Jewish Community here in Sunnyside.
